The Trichnotherapy Program was established in 1996 to help people to stop hair pulling and addictive behaviours. Trichnotherapy includes urge reduction and relapse prevention. Coaching Care took over in 2019, when the program was upgraded and adapted for ACT. It has an unrivalled success rate. The course addresses avoidance as a symptom for many people with trichotillomania/other addictive behaviours.
ACT is a derivative of CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, used worldwide to treat trichotillomania and other body-focused repetitive behaviours.
How will this course affect my urges?
We would expect the course to help you to reduce your own urges over the course of a few weeks. For some they will disappear altogether, but for others they will not. Our research shows this can be related to the age of the person and how long the negative behaviour was established. However, there are a number of factors at play, which mean we cannot guarantee a reduction is urges. One is genetics, meaning that some people will have a stronger strain of compulsion than others; another relevant factor is obviously the effort you are able and prepared to put in.
ACT stands for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
Acceptance
The first stage of recovery is acceptance that you have a condition which may be with you for life. It is important to accept and face this fact, and sometimes the acceptance stage can take a while. There is a reason that alcoholics stand and declare “My name is XYZ and I am an alcoholic.” Facing the problem allows you to recognise the level of preparation and planning which will help you to alleviate the problem. Additionally, acceptance involves understanding that once in recovery, you will remain in recovery. It will always be a priority for you.
Commitment
The commitment part of this course is essential, so we recommend that you devote twenty minutes per day to evaluating your day in reference to your hair pulling or other unwanted actions. Consequently, you’ll be able to plan what you’ll do the following day in order to manage and reduce your pulling.
What to Expect
This course releases one lesson per week. You will get best results from downloading and printing the pdfs and putting them into action for the full week before moving on to the next one. You are free to progress at your own pace. The lessons have been designed by people who are themselves in recovery from hair pulling and related conditions, and most of the PDFs contain straight-forward habit reversal techniques.
You will consider your own unique personality while working through the course, identifying areas of your life which you would like to develop more fully. By prioritising these areas of enjoyment, you will reduce the amount of time spent ruminating and learn to slow your brainwaves with relaxation.
